If you have filed for disability or been recently declared disabled it’s important to talk to someone today to coordinate your benefits. Unfortunately, growing numbers of people are substantially impacted by being forced to pay back large marketplace subsidies when they were enrolled in the marketplace and Medicare at the same time. It’s important to speak to an agent to coordinate your care. The good news is with planning, Medicare is most often the very best coverage someone with a disability can have. You will have automatic Medicare enrollment with diagnosis of any of the below:
- ALS (Lou Gherig’s Disease)
- Major Organ Transplants (Lung, Heart, Pancreas, Intestine & Liver)
- ESRD (Kidney Failure) – after 4 months of dialysis
- Need of Stem Cell Transplant
Other reasons for qualifying for disability such as but not limited to:
- Psychotherapy diagnosis
- Cases of major mental diagnosis
Furthermore, If you have had disability for a 24 month period you will be automatically enrolled in Medicare part A.
When you have received SSDI for at least 24 months you cannot:
Enroll in a Marketplace plan.
If you do continue in your marketplace plan after being automatically enrolled in Part A, you will lose your subsidy. Some agents don’t understand this and you will be in for a big surprise come tax season
