What is a Health Share?

Health shares are communities of individuals who pool their resources into a managed fund, designed to cover medical expenses collectively. While they share similarities with conventional insurance plans, they operate through member contributions to support one another’s healthcare needs.

How Health Shares Work

  • Members contribute a set amount each month to their health share organization.
  • These contributions are pooled into a managed fund.
  • When a member requires medical care, the health share plan helps cover their medical expenses.

Benefits of Health Shares

Deciding if health shares are the right fit for your needs involves thoughtful evaluation and consideration.

Health Share Videos

Flexibility in Provider Choice

Health shares generally do not impose network restrictions, giving members the freedom to choose their preferred healthcare providers. This flexibility allows individuals to access care from trusted doctors, hospitals, or specialists without being confined to specific networks.

Affordability

Health shares frequently offer a more affordable alternative for managing healthcare costs compared to traditional insurance plans. Members usually contribute lower monthly amounts (comparable to premiums), resulting in substantial potential savings over time.

Shared Community and Support

Health shares cultivate a sense of community among members with shared values and ideals. This connection offers support, encouragement, and the chance to engage with like-minded individuals who appreciate and relate to their experiences.

Shared Decision-Making

Health share members are often encouraged to take an active role in their healthcare decisions. This shared responsibility empowers individuals to collaborate with their healthcare providers, explore treatment options, and make informed choices about their care.

Exemption From Insurance Mandates

In certain jurisdictions, health shares may be exempt from specific insurance mandates. This exemption offers individuals an alternative way to manage their healthcare expenses, potentially bypassing penalties or obligations tied to traditional health insurance plans.

Health Shares vs. Health Insurance

While health shares and health insurance share many similarities, they also have key differences. When deciding between the two, it’s essential to carefully consider the following factors:

Health Shares are organizations that members contribute monthly to pay for medical expenses. Each health share has different guidelines for members to adhere to.

Health Shares typically have lower pre-subsidy costs than comparable ACA/Obamacare plans because they are based on household income.

Health Shares offer Nationwide PPO networks versus local HMO/EPO networks through Obamacare.

Health Shares are available to enroll 365 days a year with no qualifying event needed.

Health Shares are automatically renew, so there is no need to have renew your plan each year.

Health Shares membership fees are not tax deductible.

Traditional Health Insurance Vs. Health Share Coverage

Negatives of Traditional Health Insurance

Health Insurance Can Be a Challenge

Network
Traditional health insurance plans usually offer a choice between a network of healthcare providers within your area. For those who enroll in an Affordable Care Act plan, the network is often limited to EPO or HMO plans, which can make your provider options limited.
Deductibles
Traditional health insurance plans come with an annual deductible that may change each year. The average out‑of‑pocket is $7,400 or more. Depending on your income, you may be able to apply for a subsidy to assist with your out‑of‑pocket costs.
Price
Traditional health insurance plans are offered in various tiers, including Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. These tiers represent a trade‑off between monthly premiums and out‑of‑pocket expenses — Bronze plans typically have lower monthly premiums but higher deductibles and copays.
Consistency
Plans change every year, and you have to renew it every year.
