History of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Iowa
1939
Hospital Service Incorporated of Iowa, which later became Blue Cross of Iowa, was founded and commenced operations in Des Moines. Concurrently, in the same year, Associated Hospital Services Incorporated, later known as Blue Cross of Western Iowa and South Dakota, was established in Sioux City, Iowa.
1945
Iowa Medical Service, which was later rebranded as Blue Shield of Iowa, was established.
1989
Blue Cross of Iowa, Blue Shield of Iowa, and Blue Cross of Western Iowa and South Dakota joined forces to create IASD Health Services Corporation through a merger.
1991
Following the merger, IASD Health Services Corporation transformed into a mutual insurance company, with ownership vested in its shareholders.
1997
IASD Health Services Corporation adopts the name Wellmark.
2011
Wellmark collaborates with Healthways to introduce the Blue Zones Project, a pivotal initiative under Iowa’s Healthiest State Initiative. The primary goal of the Blue Zones Project is to enhance the well-being of all Iowans, as measured by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. This joint effort aims to bring about positive changes and improvements in the overall health and wellness of the community.
2012
Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa announces a groundbreaking collaboration with Iowa Health System and Mercy Medical Center – Des Moines, creating Iowa’s first commercial health plan Accountable Care Organization (ACOs).
2016
Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa form two new health insurance companies in partnership with Mercy Health Network and the University of Iowa Health System. These collaborations aim to develop and offer health insurance plans both on and off the public exchange, as well as in the small group market.
2017
Healthy Hometown Powered by Wellmark is launched to improve residents’ overall well-being in Iowa and South Dakota communities. The program offers proven tools for long-lasting changes that transform the places where citizens live, work, and play, making healthier choices more accessible and easier.
