Quick Facts about Medicare in Florida
Did you know that over 4.5 million Medicare beneficiaries call Florida their home? Medicare, a federal health insurance program for individuals 65 and older as well as certain disabled individuals, plays a crucial role in ensuring access to healthcare for Florida’s senior population.
How Medicare works in Florida
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 years and older, as well as individuals with certain disabilities. In Florida, Medicare beneficiaries can choose from a variety of Medicare Advantage plans, which offer additional coverage beyond traditional Medicare and are provided by private insurance companies. Overall, Medicare in Florida gives individuals the opportunity to tailor their healthcare coverage to fit their unique needs and preferences.
When to Sign Up for Florida Medicare
After getting Parts A and B, you can also either get a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan coupled with a part D Prescription Drug Plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan. Once 65 or older, starting with the month part B is effective and lasting for six months is the Open Enrollment Period. This is the best time to sign up for a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan, as outside of this timeframe the Medigap plan may require underwriting which could mean the plan is not available or is more expensive than when applying during the Open Enrollment Period. People who have Medicare due to disability will have two Open Enrollment periods, the first when Part B is effective, and a second when the beneficiary turns 65. You can also sign up for a Medicare Advantage plan during the Open Enrollment Period. Medicare Annual Enrollment Period takes place from October 15th through December 7th each year, during which individuals can make changes to their Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug plan for the upcoming year. While Medicare can be a complex program, understanding the enrollment process and options available in Missouri can help ensure that you have the best coverage for your needs.
