Types of Health Insurance in Kansas

There are four types of health insurance plans available in Kansas: Bronze plans, Silver plans, Gold plans, and Platinum plans. Each type of plan has its own set of benefits and costs.

  • Bronze plans have the lowest monthly premiums but also have the highest out-of-pocket costs. This means that if you plan on using your health insurance frequently, a Bronze plan may not be the best option for you.

  • Silver plans offer lower out-of-pocket expenses compared to Bronze plans. This makes them an ideal option for individuals who anticipate frequent utilization of their health insurance, without wanting to strain their finances in the process.

  • Gold plans offer the second-lowest monthly premiums but come with relatively higher out-of-pocket costs. Similar to Silver plans, they are ideal for individuals who anticipate frequent healthcare utilization without wanting to overspend.

  • Platinum plans have the highest monthly premiums but also have the lowest out-of-pocket costs. If you can afford the high premium, a Platinum plan may be the best choice for you if you think you will need to use your health insurance often.

When to Enroll in Kansas Health Insurance

Enrolling in health insurance in Kansas is only restricted for On-Exchange/ACA insurance plans. For these plans, most people can only enroll during the Open Enrollment period. Open Enrollment for the federal ACA Marketplace is from November 1, 2024 – December 15, 2024. To enroll outside of Open Enrollment, you will need a qualifying life event.

With some exceptions, there are no restrictions on enrolling in Off-Exchange plans. Generally speaking, plans that are not found on the federal Marketplace allow enrollment year-round.

Types of Health Insurance in Kansas

There are tiers in the Kansas health insurance market, with each having its own advantages and disadvantages. The lowest tier offers the cheapest premiums, but the highest deductibles. Higher tiers offer lower deductibles and lower out-of-pocket costs. It is important to note that insurance rates may change based on the number of people who need coverage and their age.

  • Bronze plans (also known as Catastrophic plans) have the cheapest monthly premiums, but they also have the highest out-of-pocket costs. This means that if you need to use your insurance, you will have to pay more out-of-pocket before your insurance kicks in. Bronze plans primarily cover emergency medical expenses and you cannot use a premium tax credit to reduce your cost.
  • Silver plans have higher monthly premiums, but they also have lower out-of-pocket costs in comparison to Bronze plans. Sliver plans help provide more balance between monthly payments and out-of-pocket costs. Sliver plans are best for people who have average medical costs and lower incomes.
  • Gold plans offer lower out-of-pocket costs in exchange for higher monthly premiums. They are designed to minimize the financial burden of high deductibles, making them an ideal choice for individuals or families with above average healthcare needs or prescribed expensive medications.

Bronze (Catastrophic) plans are the cheapest health insurance plan

  • Bronze health insurance plans have low monthly premiums but high annual deductibles.
  • They are ideal for people without chronic health conditions or who cannot afford a traditional health insurance plan.
  • Bronze plans provide protection against major illnesses, injuries, and intensive care costs.
  • They are available in several states, including Kansas.

Silver plans offer cost-sharing reductions

  • Silver plans offer cost-sharing reductions to people who meet certain income requirements.
  • The federal government used to reimburse insurers for these reductions, but the Trump Administration stopped doing so. As a result, insurers have raised premiums for silver plans.
  • The amount of cost-sharing reduction you receive depends on your income.
  • There are different types of silver plans available, with varying premiums and benefits.
  • Silver plans are offered through the individual and state marketplaces.
