Health insurance is an important part of staying healthy and financially secure. It can help you pay for medical expenses, including doctor visits, hospital stays, and prescriptions. Private health insurance plans provide individuals and families with the flexibility to choose a plan that best fits their specific needs, budget, and preferred network of healthcare providers.

If you are a resident of Missouri, there are a number of private health insurance plans available to you.

Private Health Insurance in Missouri

Types of Private Health Insurance

HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)

HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plans require you to choose a primary care doctor who coordinates your care. HMO plans typically have lower premiums than other types of plans.

PPO (Preferred Provider Organization)

PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans allow you to see any doctor in the plan’s network, but you will pay more to see a doctor outside of the network. PPO plans typically have higher premiums than HMO plans.

POS (Point of Service)

POS (Point of Service) plans are a hybrid of HMO and PPO plans. You can choose a primary care doctor, but you can also see a doctor outside of the network for a higher copay. POS plans typically have premiums in between HMO and PPO plans.

EPO (Exclusive Provider Organizations)

EPO (Exclusive Provider Organizations) also offer a network of doctors and specialists, but coverage for out-of-network providers may vary based on your plan. While some EPOs may require a primary care physician, others may not. Unlike HMOs, EPOs generally do not mandate referrals for specialist visits.

Categories of Health Insurance Plans in Missouri

There are four categories of health insurance plans available in Missouri: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Each type of plan has different levels of coverage and costs. The type of plan that is right for you depends on your needs and budget.

  • Bronze plans have the lowest monthly premiums, but they also have the highest out-of-pocket costs. This means that if you need to use your insurance, you will have to pay more out-of-pocket before your insurance kicks in.
  • Silver plans have higher monthly premiums, but they also have lower out-of-pocket costs in comparison to Bronze plans. Sliver plans help provide more balance between monthly payments and out-of-pocket costs.
  • Gold plans offer lower out-of-pocket costs in exchange for higher monthly premiums. They are designed to minimize the financial burden of high deductibles, making them an ideal choice for individuals or families with frequent healthcare needs or expensive prescription medications.
  • Platinum plans have the highest monthly premiums and the lowest out-of-pocket costs of any health insurance plan available. Due to high monthly premiums, deductibles are very low, meaning your plan starts paying its share earlier than for other categories of plans.
