How Medicare Works in Indiana
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for individuals 65 and older, as well as those with disabilities or specific conditions. Indiana follows the same Medicare guidelines as other states.
Medicare Part A covers hospital expenses, while Part B covers outpatient services like doctor’s visits and preventive care. Part D offers optional prescription drug coverage for an additional fee. Medicare Advantage plans, approved by Medicare, are alternatives to original Medicare.
It’s important for Indiana residents to understand their Medicare options and make informed coverage decisions. Medicaid provides coverage for low-income individuals and may be necessary for Medicare recipients with limited income. Working with a trusted healthcare advisor ensures appropriate Medicare coverage. Stay updated on Medicare guidelines for uninterrupted access to healthcare.
When to Sign Up for Indiana Medicare
Medicare Annual Enrollment Period takes place from October 15th through December 7th each year, during which individuals can make changes to their Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug plan for the upcoming year.
Private companies also offer Medicare Supplement Insurance plans to help cover out of pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare (Parts A and B).
While Medicare can be a complex program, understanding the enrollment process and options available in Indiana can help ensure that you have the best coverage for your needs.

What is a Medicare Advantage Plan?
An Indiana Medicare Advantage plan is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits. As we mentioned above, while traditional Medicare is administered by the federal government. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies that contract with Medicare.
In other words, if you enroll in an Indiana Medicare Advantage plan, your coverage will be provided by a private insurer rather than the government.
Types of Indiana Medicare Advantage Plans
Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)
HMOs have lower monthly premiums due to their requirement for in-network provider usage. Seeing a specialist or receiving out-of-area care may require personal payment as it falls outside the HMO’s coverage network. Enrollees must select a primary care physician (PCP) to oversee their care in HMOs.
Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs)
PPOs provide flexibility by allowing enrollees to visit out-of-network providers, but at a higher cost compared to in-network providers. PPOs lack contracts with out-of-network providers, unlike in-network providers. Enrollees in PPOs are not required to choose a PCP or obtain referrals for specialists. However, PPOs generally have higher monthly premiums due to their larger networks and comprehensive services.
Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans
PFFS plans permit enrollees to visit any provider who agrees to accept the plan’s payment for covered services. There are no networks or need for referrals with PFFS plans. Due to their increased flexibility compared to HMOs and PPOs, PFFS plans often have higher monthly premiums.
Special Needs Plans (SNPs)
SNPs cater to individuals with specific chronic conditions, institutionalized individuals, and dual eligibles (eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare). SNPs provide customized care and benefits based on the needs of their enrollee population, which may exclude certain coverages like dental or vision.
