Types of Health Insurance

There are three types of health insurance plans available in Las Vegas: Bronze plans, Silver plans, and Gold / Platinum plans. Each metal level has its own set of benefits and costs.

Bronze

Bronze plans have the lowest monthly premiums but also have the highest out-of-pocket costs. This means that if you plan on using your health insurance frequently, a Bronze plan may not be the best option for you.

Silver

Silver plans offer lower out-of-pocket expenses compared to Bronze plans. This makes them an ideal option for individuals who anticipate frequent utilization of their health insurance, without straining their finances in the process.

Gold

Gold & Platinum plans have the highest monthly premiums but also have the lowest out-of-pocket costs. If you can afford the high premium, a Platinum plan may be the best choice for you if you think you will need to use your health plan often.

how to enroll in a marketplace plan

Nevada Health Insurance Enrollment

Enrolling in Nevada health insurance coverage is only restricted for On-Exchange/ACA insurance plans. For these plans, most people can only enroll during the Open Enrollment period.

Open Enrollment for the federal ACA Marketplace is from November 1, 2024 – December 15, 2024. To enroll outside of Open Enrollment, you will need a qualifying life event.

With some exceptions, there are no restrictions on enrolling in Off-Exchange plans. Typically, plans that are not found on the federal Marketplace allow enrollment year-round.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I compare health insurance plans in Las Vegas?

You can compare health insurance plans or by consulting with a licensed insurance broker or on Nevada health link website.

It is important to note that an insurance broker can help guide you through your plan options including differences in coverage, network, and cost to make an informed decision.

What is the cheapest health insurance in Nevada?

The cheapest health insurance can start as low as $152 per person for major medical or Bronze plans.

The cheapest Sliver and Gold plans can cost on average $200 – $300 depending on your income and health status.

Can I get health insurance outside of the open enrollment period in Las Vegas?

Yes, you may be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if you experience certain life events, such as moving, getting married, or losing other health coverage. Documentation of the event is typically required to apply during a SEP.

What is an ACA Plan?

An ACA plan refers to a health insurance policy that is compliant with the provisions set forth by the Affordable Care Act (ACA), often referred to as Obamacare.

These plans are required to cover 10 essential health benefits, including outpatient care, emergency services, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use disorder services, prescription drugs, rehabilitative services and devices, laboratory services, preventive and wellness services, and pediatric services.

ACA plans cannot deny coverage or charge higher premiums based on pre-existing conditions. They are available for purchase during the annual Open Enrollment period, with special enrollment periods for those who qualify due to certain life events.

What is a Short Term Health Insurance Plan?

Short Term health insurance plans, sometimes referred to as temporary health insurance, are plans designed to provide coverage for a limited period of time, typically ranging from one month up to one year. These plans can be a viable option for individuals in transition, such as those between jobs, waiting for other health insurance to start, or those who missed the Open Enrollment period and do not have a qualifying life event for a Special Enrollment Period. It’s important to note that Short Term plans are less comprehensive than ACA plans and may not cover pre-existing conditions or the full range of essential health benefits. They serve more as a stopgap to help protect against unforeseen medical costs during a temporary coverage gap.

What should I do if I can't afford any health insurance plan?

If you find that you cannot afford any health insurance plan, you may be eligible for Medicaid or financial assistance. In Nevada, Medicaid is available to qualified individuals and families with limited income and resources.

You can apply for Medicaid at any time during the year. At Apollo, you can connect with a licensed health insurance advisor to find the right health insurance plan for you.

Who is eligible for health insurance subsidies in Las Vegas?

Eligibility for Nevada health insurance subsidies depends on various factors including income, household size, and insurance status.

Subsidies are primarily available to individuals and families whose income falls between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level.

Additionally, you must not be eligible for public health insurance programs such as Medicaid or Medicare, nor have access to health coverage through an employer.

It’s also important to note that the amount of subsidy you may receive is directly related to your income level: the lower your income within the eligibility range, the higher your subsidy.

For individuals and families in Las Vegas exploring the health insurance marketplace, comprehending eligibility criteria and potential financial aid can mitigate healthcare expenses.

Are Marketplace Health Insurance Premiums Increasing in Las Vegas?

Marketplace health insurance premiums can fluctuate based on various factors, including location. For 2024, some plans in Nevada’s ACA Marketplace, including those offered in Las Vegas, have been approved for rate increases.

However, with subsidies and assistance, many Nevada residents will still find affordable health insurance that suit their needs.
