History of Blue Cross Blue Shield Michigan
1938
Blue Cross Blue Shield came to Michigan and the Michigan Society for Group Hospitalization formed. A comprehensive plan for doctors’ services was also developed, and it was given the name Michigan Medical Service.
1940
The Michigan Medical Service commenced its operations, serving as a healthcare provider. At that time, the Michigan Society for Group Hospitalization had already amassed a customer base of over 175,000 individuals from 350 employers. Shortly after, both the Society and the Service underwent a name transformation, becoming more recognizable as Michigan Blue Cross and Michigan Blue Shield.
1966
The U.S. turned to Michigan Blue Cross and Michigan Blue Shield to administer Medicare in the state.
1975
Michigan Blue Cross and Michigan Blue Shield finally merged to become Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. They changed the board of directors so that customers made up the majority of the board. It’s still that way today.
1990
By the 1990s, Blue Care Network was the largest health maintenance organization (HMO) in the state, the first HMO in Michigan and the U.S. to earn accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance, and was recognized as one of America’s top HMOs.
Today
3,000 employees relocated from the Southfield location to downtown Detroit’s GM Renaissance Center. They also became a nonprofit mutual company, allowing members to have a stronger voice.
Recent Changes with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan
- In January 2023, changes were made to prescription drug plans. These changes help Blue Cross Blue Shield and Blue Care Network to continue to provide access to the medicine you need through a large nationwide pharmacy network while working to help make your prescriptions more affordable.

What Plans Does Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Have?
BCBS of Michigan has 3 different types of ACA Plans: Bronze, Silver, and Gold Plans.
Bronze Plans
Bronze plans are the best option if you don’t use your health insurance often. They have the lowest monthly payments for people over 30, but you’ll pay full cost for many services before you pay your deductible.
Silver Plans
Silver plans can put good health care coverage within your budget. With much lower deductibles than bronze plans, you pay less up front for care. If you qualify for a subsidy, the value gets even better.
Gold Plans
Gold plans make your expenses more predictable. Your fixed monthly payments are higher than bronze or silver plans. But when you use your insurance, you’ll pay less out of pocket.
